Artist Inspiration – Philip Lorca Dicorcia

Philip Lorca Dicorcia is known for his work in public spaces. Some of his work takes advantage of natural lighting while other work is done via flashes that are added to the scene. Perhaps his most famous work is his Heads series, where he photographs random pedestrians as they pass by a flash. He is able to capture their natural expressions from a distance. By removing himself from the scene, he becomes an observer rather than a participant in the scene. This aspect of his work has a large influence on my own work as part of my concept as an artist is an observer that reports to the viewer. By working in an enclosed spaced, I almost “contaminate” the scene.

Dicorcia studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts and earned his MFA at Yale University. He is an American Photographer, and currently teaches at Yale University.
