Project Zzzzs: DEPRIVATION TERRORS

I studied the process of sleep and did some research and decided I wanted to explore the science of sleep deprivation and how it affects the mind and alters memory. I decided to go this route because we’ve talked various times about memory throughout this class. Especially after our last guest came and talked about the science between memory and how we develop our taste buds. I found this artist named Kevin McGloughlin who used visuals to display the anxiety and restlessness that sleep deprivation evokes.  I want to continue to use video as my medium and mimic his work and also give my own take as well.

RESEARCH

Sleep Deprivation
  • Sleep deprivation and the causes it has on a individuals mind.
  • Sleep is important to health when it comes to diet and exercise and also your well being. The amount of sleep that is required is not the same for all people.
  • The recommended length to sleep is at least eight hours.
  • Sleep is a necessary function designed to rid the brain of built-up wastes through the glymphatic system.
The effects of Sleep Deprivation
  1. The inability to focus
  2. create a lag in response time
  3. poor cognitive function.
  4. mood swings
Health Impacts
  1. Impacts cardiovascular
  2. impacts respiratory
  3. impacts the immune system
  4. A delay in response time due to limited amounts of sleep can lead to impaired driving.
  5. Mood swings caused by lack of sleep can lead to problems with communication.  Creates higher levels of agitation and frustration.
  6. results in anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges as well.

For this project, I recorded what I believe goes on in the mind of someone who’s been sleep-deprived. I took inspiration from Kevin McGloughlin’s work that can be seen in the article
