“I seek to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos that continue to fascinate me.”
Shanthi Chandrasekar is a multimedia, multidisciplinary artist based in Maryland. She has a BSc in Physics and a MA in Psychology. Influenced by her Indian heritage, her works are involved in where the scientific and the spiritual intersect. She aims to understand the workings of the cosmos, life, and the brain.
Chandrasekar grew up in a Department of Atomic Energy township in India, which fed her aspirations to become a scientist and an artist. She experimented with mediums, ideas, and concepts in her studio as an artist.
Chandrasekar often drew while listening to online talks and lectures by scientists. Their descriptions would be the starting point for new drawings or paintings.
The Vedas and the epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata, along with various ancient texts like the Lalitha Sahasranamam, are filled with powerful descriptions and serve as a resource for Chandrasekar’s artwork.
As a multimedia artist, Chandrasekar tends to work with various media to find the one that best communicates her thoughts. The underlying focus of her work is to understand the workings of the cosmos and life itself through art.
Artists can help create a bridge between the scientists and the community through art. Through collaborations with scientists, Chandrasekar believes artists can translate complex concepts into interesting art projects that are more easily accessible to the community through outreach programs.
Chandrasekar’s artwork is a result of her love for learning, curiosity, and imagination, and she hopes that her work can inspire the same for her audience.
