Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) was a Victorian portrait photographer and is considered to be the greatest photographer of the mid-19th century. In many of her works, you can feel the temperature of images from a century and a half ago, which is ancient and quiet.
Portrait is an artistic style “taken” from traditional painting art after the birth of photography. Mrs.Cameron practiced fine art photography and for about eleven years of her life focused entirely on non-commercial portrait art. Her work is full of a deep spiritual sense of the genre, as well as the beauty of the Pre-Raphaelites. Her unique approach has allowed her to create extraordinary portrait photography that recaptures some of the art of the Renaissance while reflecting the innocence, virtue, piety and passion of Victorian womanhood.
Mrs.Cameron’s work is known for soft-focus blurred figures that capture a model’s personality. She used to put oily substances on the camera lens to form a scorched effect, and the lack of clarity is also a hallmark of her work.Ms Cameron’s camera captures a variety of people, including neighbors and friends; Some are her relatives, such as her niece and her husband; Many famous figures, such as Charles Darwin and Thomas Carlyle, also appear in her works. She also took stage photographs with allegorical or religious significance, similar to pre-Raphaelite paintings.
I think portrait photography is never boring. Mrs. Cameron made me understand the relevance of early portrait photography to traditional painting art and the connectivity between art fields.A good portrait requires insight into the heart of the character, Mrs.Cameron’s work feels as if she is in communion with the soul of her character.
