ARS 402 Project (So Far)

My project is based on people’s stereotypes of geology and geologist. Like I said in my proposal, people think that geologists are those who crack stones with hammers in a small dark room, and have a creepy smile on their faces. I do not know why those people feel that geologists are like Gollum from Lord of The Ring but as an environmental studies/ geology student myself, it is my responsibility to use documentary photography to break that stereotype.

I think documentary photography serves as a tool to provide information for others to learn about what they might not know. Documentary photography is a style that presents straightforward records of events, people, and places. Therefore, my project is to record during my geology classes.

The project is planned to have two parts. The first part will concentrate on the geology labs and research, and the second part is going to concentrate on field trips and landscapes. I have not finished the first part yet, so my pictures so far are about field trips and landscapes.

As you might have discovered, all of these pictures are pre-edit versions, and they do not contain labs and research. That would be what I am going to do for the rest of the semester. I have made permission from my professors and my mentor to take pictures while they are doing research, and I will edit the raw file with some adjustments as well.

  1. Hi Jiefu,
I like your geological photography and your documentary photos of geologists. As you said, many people have traditional stereotypes about geology. I used to think that the life of a geologist must be boring, studying geography with big data in the research institute every day. But when I looked at your pictures, I think you gave me a picture of geologists in a beautiful, vast landscape, and it really blew my mind. I think documentary photography is really a very appropriate way to show people the truth of geology and the passion of researchers!

  2. Hey Geoffrey, great job with your project! I absolutely loved the photographs you have taken so far and I cannot wait to see them after they are edited. My favorite picture definitely has to be the close up shot of the beach floor. The image is very detailed and I can make out all the rocks, shells, and sand patterns easily. Are you planning to explore more environments? How many field trips do you have left in the semester? Cannot wait to see how the data compliments the images!

    1. I really love your photos you’ve been doing, the shots are really nice! I think adding some writing to talk about the narrative of your field trip and what you’ve been doing would help to elevate the story they are trying to tell. I especially love those shots showcasing the cliffs by the water, it really adds a sense of scale to the location where this took place!

  3. Hi!

Love what you have so far! Curious to see what the lab and research photos may contain. I think what you have is strong, but there might need to be more to it! Maybe another field trip or like you mentioned some photos of research from your professors, etc. I also noticed how you said these pictures are not edited yet, and personally, I don’t think you need to do much to them, they are beautiful. Maybe a few touch-ups, but I think the images are strong as they are now, Great job, looking forward to your presentation.
