Statement:

The theme of my project is about the different ways of expression between traditional Chinese paintings and modern paintings. I use two different methods to express the same thing. The theme I use is “Plum, Orchid, Bamboo, and Chrysanthemum”, which are the four gentlemen in traditional Chinese culture. My card is two-sided. On the front, I used the traditional Chinese ink painting to express “Plum, Orchid, Bamboo and Chrysanthemum”. The opposite is the type of modern art, which is more inclined to abstract painting. I want to use colors and lines to express the image and temperament of the “plum, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum” in my mind. I used ancient Chinese paintings and added a round frame. This will highlight the theme of the painting.

Plum blossoms bloom in the snow. It blooms beautiful flowers in the cold winter. It always represents the spirit of not being afraid of difficulties. Its floral fragrance is very light, but very long-lasting, so I used light yellow to represent its fragrance. The plum blossoms in the picture are red. Red also gives a feeling of exuberant life. The background is snow and sky. Orchids bloom in the valley, sometimes in the crevices of rocks. The orchid represents a noble and pure heart. Blue is always associated with a sense of detachment and separation from the world. The white lines represent the wind in the valley and the fragrance of orchids lingering in the space. The straight stem of bamboo represents honorability. Because when the external force tries to show its growth direction, the bamboo will either break through the difficulty and continue to grow straight, or it will be broken and die. Green represents tenacious vitality, and straight lines represent the shape of bamboo. The chrysanthemum represents the hermit. My source of inspiration is Tao’s poem “I pluck chrysanthemums under the eastern hedge, And gaze afar towards the southern mountains.” I blurred the background of this painting, leaving only the clear yellow in front. This reminds people to pay attention to themselves, not foreign objects.

Traditional Chinese painting and modern painting have different methods of conveying information. From the project I made, the differences can be easily and clearly seen. Traditional Chinese painting uses black and lines to express the theme of the picture. I used a more modern and abstract method to express the theme. This not only expresses the theme, but also makes the audience think of more things.
