1. Project Title:

Beauty of Reality

2. Project Describtion

There are many good-looking women and men on the Internet. Also, human skin and body are always perfect in drama, photos and videos. This created Social Appearance Anxiety. It refers to social anxiety surrounding overall appearance, including body shape, and fear of negative evaluation by others (Koskina, 2011). Women and men try to make themselves looks perfect. They use filters, and even undergo surgery for that. They have difficulties to accept who they really are. They pay great attention to appearance. This phenomenon is very obvious in women. In the research of Barnett, for women, the ideal was thinner than the current figure regardless of actual size, producing a discrepancy between current and ideal figures(Barnett, 2001). I try to express the beauty of reality, to refute the current mainstream aesthetics. I want women to accept themselves and do not have anxiety.

In my work, I will use the camera to take photos, and finally use Photoshop to post-processing the photos. I will use light and shadow on the human body to express the texture of the skin and the lines of muscles. I will take  photos of the partial human body and use light and shadow to form abstract photos to show the art of the human body.

3. Outcomes

  • I hope I can express the true beauty of the skin with lights and shadows.
  • 8 photos on the blog.
  • All pictures will be rectangular.
  • The photo will be 297mm*420mm, 300ppi

4. Methods and Meterials

I will use a camera, a female model, and a lighting. After shooting, use Photoshop to take screenshots and color grades. The light will be placed on the side of the model, and the photo will be a low-key photo. Models will not have facial shots, only body parts.

5. Artist Reference

Francesca Stern Woodman (April 3, 1958 – January 19, 1981) was an American photographer. She was in Rhode Island School of Design. Franceseca’s photographs are mostly very small in scale. These encourage us to look at them closely and deeply to work out what we are seeing and decipher their messages. When we find Francesca, she often appears naked or partially clothed, disguised or abstracted by photographic effects such as blurring caused by slow shutter speeds.

Laurent Castellani is a photographer and videographer from France. He stadyed at law school and at graphic design school. Castellani suffers from agoraphobia and an anxiety disorder in which a person perceives certain situations to be unsafe, such as open spaces, public transport, or being outside of their personal environment. This condition pushes him to observe detail which is showed in his artworks.

Loreal Prystaj is a visual artist based in London and New York. Presently, she is attending the Royal College of Art in London to obtain her MA in photography. Her work often exposes the relationship between a space, and specific time and place, with a human form and its environment. “Floral Ornamental” is a work in progress exploring the pattern of nature in the domestic sphere and the relationship between women in the uncanny garden of her house.
