A Rainy Day In London Town

Rain off and on and fog couldn’t keep us, or anyone else, inside.  Monday was Remembrance Day or Armistice Day here.  The big commemoration takes place at Trafalgar Square where thousands pour in to experience the two minutes of silence.  It’s quite moving and respectful.  They have a large stage with video screen and quite a show precedes the event.  We caught a great young tenor who gave a thrilling performance just before the commemoration began at 11:00.

The walk to Trafalgar from our apartment passed along Charing Charing Cross Road dotted with great bookshops and theaters.  We passed the theater for the show The Commitments.  If it’s anything like the movie I’m interested.  Charing Cross ends at St Martin-in-the-Fields Church and the awesome Trafalgar Square.  I was surprised to note a statue of George Washington across the street on the property of the National Portrait Gallery which we visited following the Remembrance Day event.

After our museum visit we journeyed down Whitehall past government buildings and 10 Downing Street to Parliament and Westminster Abbey where we saw more Remembrance Day sites.

And another American President!

That was enough walking!  So, back to the Underground for a trip back to our place and a great dinner at In Parma to celebrate Nancy’s birthday.  One of the best meals I ever had.  Everything was from Parma, Italy so lots of cheese and charcuterie and fantastic pasta dishes.  Really fine.

Tomorrow morning we’re planning a visit to the British Museum and the London Eye (weather permitting).
