About Our Workshop Program
The Joint Photon Sciences Institute is launching a workshop and seminar series to deepen the SBU research community’s understanding of X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) and its broad scientific applications. XAFS is a powerful tool for probing local atomic environments, oxidation states, and electronic structures, making it indispensable across disciplines—from nanomaterials and catalysis to space sciences and nuclear energy. Through hands-on sessions and expert-led seminars, this series will showcase cutting-edge applications and provide researchers with insights on how to effectively integrate XAFS into their work, whether at the synchrotron or with future lab-based devices.

XAFS Office Hours
Our “XAFS Office Hours” provide hands-on training and in-depth exploration of topics in EXAFS/XANES experiment, theory, and data analysis. Each session is designed to deliver practical skills and knowledge that a participant can immediately apply to their work.
Office Hours Information
May Office Hours
Location: Earth and Space Sciences, Room 145
Focus: Are you interested in using XANES and/or EXAFS to answer your research questions? Are you not sure where to start? Are you having trouble with EXAFS fitting, XANES modeling, or experimental planning? Join us after the talk to discuss anything related to XAFS experiment, theory, and interpretation. Not sure what questions to ask? Let’s do some EXAFS fitting tutorials together! No experience required.
