I don’t think that it’s fair for The International Olympic Committee to limit athletes from posting on social media during their time at the Olympics.
The article on GeekWire cited below, names many social media rules that are in place for this winters Olympic games. Athletes, coaches and other officials with special access cannot post to social media the way a journalist would.
You would think that athletes giving a raw “inside look” to how they are experiencing Sochi 2014 would be something exciting to draw crowds in online.
Posts must be written in a diary type of format, no audio or video sharing, anyone in pictures must give consent for it to be posted, and athletes with sponsorships cannot post about their brands. The reasoning behind these limitations is to share the experience with friends and fans and not to be commercial or like an advertisement.
I understand that it would be nice for the people who are representing us as a nation to have a diary feed, but it feels like the committee is trying to cut out what is real. In our program we learn that anybody has the ability to be a journalist or think like a journalist. Where is the line between personal experience and blogger?
This is the moment these athletes have been waiting for their entire lives and I think that if they want to post a photo of themselves in their favorite brand, or let their followers know about something going on in general, they should be able to.
