Project One: “Entre chien et loup”

Seeing color is the human perception of the visible light. Within the visible light spectrum, different wavelength frequencies of light enter our eye and are then interpreted to the colors that we know; making color very dependent on light. Considering that the biggest light source we have on the planet is the sun, the color that our eyes see should vary thought the day as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Furthmore, times of light transition such as dawn and dusk lend themselves to some color visual effects that cannot be captured any other time of day.

I am not the first to come to these discoveries, film directors such as Terrance Malick (Days of Heaven, 1978) and photographers like Joel Meyerwitz’s (Provincetown Porch scenes, 1977) implement this “time of day-color variation” in their artwork. The french have a saying that best describes the effect of this light variation: entre chien et loup, “between dog and wolf.” The expression suggests that at a certain point, the limitation of light at dawn or dusk will prevent you from telling a dog apart from a wolf, making for a potentially dangerous predicament.

This is the inspiration of this first project. I want to document how light causes perception of color to change throughout the day. I took my subject, my good friend Blue Ghostheim, and I photograph him during different times of the day in various locations to see how the light levels affected the colors of the background and of Blue.

For the first set of images, I took Blue to Robert Moses State Park and I photographed him along the beach. Here’s how the photo shoot went:

This first image was taken just before sunrise at around 6:30am. As the photo depicts, Blue seems a bit darker than normal due to the lack of light. Also the sky in the background has a yellowish hue near the horizon and the waves crashing on the beach look a whitish-gray in color. This could have been affected by the cloudy weather that Sunday morning but this was Blue’s only day off and so we made the best of it.

This second image was taken at around 6:45am, just as the sun began to peak thought the clouds that were nestled at the horizon. Blue’s color hasn’t changed but the sky is now starting to look a lot more bright and lively with the introduction of the light from this giant yellow fireball burning in the sky we call the sun!

Letting another 15 minutes elapse between shots, at around 7am, we can begin to see the beginnings of a blue sky in the upper right corner of the photograph. However, as the sun keeps rising, it becomes a much more prominent light source in front of the camera and in the process loosing its beautiful yellow tint as it turns into a big white circle of light. Unfortunately for poor Blue to begin to look darker from the shadows being cast onto him.

This image was taken after we took a well deserved breakfast break and by now the sun was beginning to warm to cold beach with its rays. I took this image, this time with the sun behind us to avoid overexposure, and as we can see, Blue is back to his bright and cheerful blue hue. I still observe a warm color hue since the sun has not completely risen but the colors are still bright despite the overcast sky in the background.

By late morning, the sun was completely out and starting to burn my epithelial cells as we began to tan. Before leaving running for out lives since we forgot sunscreen and we would like to not develop any skin cancer, I took this last photograph of Blue and some washed up seaweed in the sand. With the sun well above out heads, the brightness in Blue’s color and that of the seaweed is no surprise.

Considering that returning to the beach would be too hot, Blue and I, along with my girlfriend Danielle, decided to join the Cow Harbor Day celebration down in Northport Harbor. Plenty of things people, activities happening there and also a very nice setting for the next series of photographs.

This image was taken at around 12:30pm, and this image is one of the brightest I managed to get all day! Blue is a nice bright shade of him, and the sky along with the water are equally as vibrant. The 550-420nm light wavelength was definitely favored by the sun as I took this photograph.

As the afternoon began proceed and after an order of fried Oreo’s too many, we decided to head out but not before taking another picture of Blue, this time accompanied by some of the locals in their boats. A kids regatta had just ended and that I wanted to get Blue’s celebratory dance on film! Thanks to the sunny conditions, I had no trouble getting the image with minimal shadowing. At this point in the day though, the Colors are no longer as bright as they were in the last image but we can definitely tell what everything is still.

As Blue’s day off began to come to a close, we decided that we wanted to see the “Magic Hour” just as the sun would begin to set. We piled on into the car and drove 20 minutes to Centerport Beach Park, another waterfront landscape located just down the road from the Vanderbilt Museum and Planetarium. Here are those images:

Once again, Blue is our model in these images, after all he has done such a great job all day he might as well finish the day the way it began, with a photo shoot! What I found intriguing here is that nearly 12 hours later, at around 6:30pm, I was getting photographs that reminded me of the colors I saw when we were shooting our first photographs down at Robert Moses in the morning. From the sky to the water to Blue himself, the colors I saw through the lens felt like I was standing back in that beach that very morning.

My conclusion was that as the sun began to reach similar levels of limitation, I was experiencing a deja-vu moment because I had in fact seen those very same colors that very morning, even though I was miles away and hours away from that moment and place.

As the “magic hour” left us in that beach and twilight began settled in, I began to see my wolf. Through my lens, Blue was turning darker and darker as time passed and the clarity began to get lost. His edges began to blur and it became harder to tell where his features began and ended from the background. No matter how much I tried to keep changing my cameras settings to compensate for the diminishing light, every photograph started loosing definition as the seconds turned to minutes in between shots. I also began to introduce digital noise into the images because I had to crank the ISO up so much just to prevent a black image. This was the best image of Blue that I got at this time without the need to introduce additional lighting just to keep him in focus. As it can be seen, the image looks dark, dingy, and “noisy.” The sky at that point was such a beautiful bright red that this image unfortunately does not do it justice.

This last image was achieved by a combination of lowering the shutter speed so much that it stayed open for seconds, not just fractions of seconds, and also adding some some very dim external light source. I then made minor white-balance edits in Adobe Light Room and achieved this image. Blue’s color is again bright thanks to the eternal light and the long exposure allowed for more light to enter allowing from a bright background again. This image essentially took everything I learned and documented all day and allowed it to coexist in one image. This is also Blue’s favorite image.

At the end of the day, I learned a number of valuable pieces of information. First, color and light are one and the same. The intensity of the colors we see are just our minds interpretation of the varying degrees of light we can see. Second, manual settings are amazing! I would not have been able to capture the light in some of these images had I not been brave enough to forgo the Auto setting and try to adjust to the light to get the colors I wanted. Third, amazing photography can be done at any time of day, but the times when light is undergoing a transition are times that the light lends itself for some amazing photography and I can see how a wolf can be mistaken for a dog, yikes!
