Project Title: FantaSEA
For my final project, I want to create an underwater fantasy concept. The concept would involve costuming, makeup, props, and lighting that evoke a mystical, nautical feeling. I want to create this concept through my series because I have always cherished fantasy settings, and as a scuba diver and environmentalist, I view water as an important resource and environment. The general feeling I want the viewer to experience when looking at my series is a sense of wonderment and mysticism. I came to this concept by thinking of Ariel’s Grotto in Walt Disney World, the Wizard of Oz film, Pandora from Avatar, and thinking of the art created by teamLAB and Bryan Huynh.
The technical aspects of my setup for the series involves multiple steps. First, my model will be dressed in a ballgown to evoke a fantasy concept while dressing in a gown similar to the costumes seen on Cinderella, the Little Mermaid, and Tinker Bell. A combination of tulle and lace create a delicate, regal quality whilst still being fantastical due to their rarity in daily garments. Tulle, iridescent cellophane, and cling wrap will also be used in the setting in order to give the model a sense of belonging. Reflective surfaces, water, and flowers will also be included in the shoot and backdrop in order to convince the audience of the storybook themes. I will be using shadow boxes for gentle shadows and colored gels to create a mystical quality similar to that of my references. Post-shoot, I will utilize photoshop to add glowing elements, dramatic lights and colors, and other elements similar to Bryan Huynh’s work.
