Final Project: The Art of Deception

For my final project, I wanted to expand on my design idea from the microscopy project. I was inspired by the many different methods that different organisms use for survival. Overall, I’m not the happiest with how this project came out, I was going through quite a bit of art block due to how much art I was trying to reproduce in a short amount of time. My style was fluctuating and I wasn’t able to recreate the image I envisioned. However, I think this idea had a lot of potential and it is definitely something I would want to revisit in the future.

I depicted 3 different strategies in my digital painting: mimicry, camouflage, and toxic coloration (aposematism). The design for mimicry was inspired by the fact that organisms not only mimic behavior and appearances, they can also mimic sounds that other animals make. The flute in her hand would be used to mimic noises to keep predators away. For the camouflage design, I was inspired by the showshoe hare and the descriptor “blanket of snow”. These two inspired me to make a sleepy design with a large white blanket representing the snow and the pkush rabbit representing the hare. The white color palette allows the character to blend in with the blanket as well as the background. The toxic coloration design was inspired by various Japanese substyles, the uniform is inspired by sukeban, the Japanese term for “female delinquent” or “girl boss”. This is what I used to represent the overall “go away” message that aposematism sends. The black uniform also contrasts the bright colors and makes them pop more. The bright colors in her hair and accessories are inspired by the Japanese decora style, which involves heavy accessorizing and bright hair colors.
