First, I would like to say congratulations on your solo show, Invisible Energies. I think the idea behind your work is definitely interesting and something worth exploring. It is beyond something religious and expands to a self-exploration and a spiritual discovery. To represent this concept, I think you’re on the right track by using organic shapes and vibrant colors. Typically, people parallel a feeling with an overwhelming or subtle emotion.
Personally, I thought the dancers did not vibe with the rest of your show. It felt like you had this idea to incorporate invisible energies with too many subjects, and in the end it felt out of place. I saw the subtle connection between the shape and move of the dancer to the shape and color of the flows, but there was not enough of a connection for it to fit well. The dancers felt too cut and paste with the backdrop, causing them to disconnect with their “environment” behind them. To make these two ideas match better, perhaps you can take photos of the dancers which a projector physically projects these scene onto them. This would make the dancers feel consumed by these environments, emotions, or energies. Also, there would still be casting a shadow which can be manipulated by the dancers’ movements.
There was only one photo that I was draw to in your show. It was on the right side of the gallery, close to the screen. There was something about the water flow and inks that made that piece pop with the forms and colors. To me, the most successful part of your show was the video. Its size instantly drew your attention and the flows created a sense of movement that I wanted to be a part of. I think if you played around with the speed of the video it may have made a larger variety of feelings. Most of what I felt while watching the video was a sense of wander and calmness. Furthermore, music would have definitely pushed the work to another level. You had mentioned that your opening at a musician and a dancer, so I am looking forward to seeing the video of that experience.
Overall, I think the idea of Invisible Energies came across successfully. I thought it was obvious what the intentions were for this show, which took me away from it a little bit. I’ve seen other images and videos where people play with water and inks. I just wish you expanded on the concept more to make yours stand out from the rest. It is definitely a good start, but it needs a little more to make it memorable.
