Week 1: 01/30/2015 First Day Of Internship Class

first day

January 30th was the first day of our TLT Internship class. The class consisted of 13 students where we had introductions and learned our responsibilities as future TLT senior consultants.

The main focus of the first class was to learn how to use you.stonybrook.edu. The website is part of a deal that Stony Brook has with WordPress for students to use as an academic platform. You Stony Brook has a number of different uses such as blogging, keeping track of academic classes, to even an online resume portfolio. Our guess speaker for the first day of class was Nichole from Client Support who taught us how to navigate around You. Stony Brook. We as interns learned how to create pages, customize and choose themes, save posts as drafts to publish later on and much more.

I think that this program is very useful to all Stony Brook students because it is a good starting place for people to get a foot hold on intern. When people are looking for jobs, they can refer companies to their You. Stony Brook website in order to get a better understanding of them aside from the standard resume interview. It’s good to learn about the different programs that Stony Brook offers so that if students have questions about using the website, me as a senior consultant will be able to provide the answers that they need.

Personally I find You. Stony Brook as a good refresher because in the past during high school, I interned for a web design company in Manhattan where they used WordPress to create webpages for their customers. Going over the website again is a good way of refreshing my mind and at the same time learn new features.

Besides learning about You. Stony Brook we also learned about another website offered by Stony Brook called Yammer. Yammer is a enterprise social network used for connecting businesses and professionals. Each intern was assigned their own account on the website where they can post and comment on people’s work. I think its a good idea to learn about Yammer because not many students know that Stony Brook offers such a website. Therefore, as future senior consultants we can spread the word about Yammer so that more people can take advantage of the opportunity that it provides.
