Week 5: 02/27/2015 Fine Arts Tour and Shadowing

This weeks internship class did not take place in its usual classroom of Main Library W-4545 but instead took place in Fine Arts! There are two different computer sites in the Fine Arts building that TLT supports. One is on the 1st floor called the EMedia SINC site while the other one is on the 4th floor known as the Hybrid Lab. Each SINC site comes with its own unique features that consultants should know how to use. The class first started in the Hybrid lab where the most important thing is knowing how to use the projector. Now as consultants, we don’t need to be experts but we do have to at least know how to turn it on/off and what channel to set it to. Besides the projector it’s also good to know their is no card reader in the room, so students that print out documents will go directly to the printer. After touring the Hybrid lab we went back down to the 1st floor to check out the EMedia Site. Now this SINC site is whole different story compared to other SINC sites on campus. First and foremost this site has all mac computers and is open 24/7 to art and music majors. Computers at this site have very specific programs and accessories such as microphones, keyboards, and drawing tablets. Consultants working in this site are expected to know the basics of each one in addition to using the large projector in the front of the classroom. The Emedia Site also has no card scanner so documents are automatically sent to the printer. In the back of the classroom there is a large scanner used for scanning high detail documents and images.

After the internship class was over, we as interns decided to go eat lunch together. There was some debate about whether or not to eat at SAC for crepes or Jasmine but we ultimately ended up choosing Jasmine. All the interns came to eat and we chatted for a good 40 minutes by the round tables in the Wang Center. I felt like this was a good way to get to know everyone because in the future we would be relying on each other as senior consultants. Some of us senior consultants also went to go watch Big Hero 6 later on in the day.

Moving on, during this week’s shadowing of site managers, we went over topics such as paper quota, cost per sheet, and discussions at site meetings. Celia informed me that as senior consultants we have to set up to monthly meetings for our SINC sites. I know that most consultants use the website Doodle to find the best time of availability for people. During site meetings common topics include blogging, no food/drink policy, walking around every couple of minutes, projector and reporting any other issues that many occur. It’s important to keep consultants updated with the latest policies such as when someone is closing, he or she no longer has to turn off the computers because they will automatically shutoff by themselves. A question that may come up while working at TLT is the price of printing. A single sided sheet is 5 cents while a double sided sheet is 25 cents. Single sided color printing is 25 cents while double sided is 40 cents. Students have a weekly quota of $7.00 that refreshes every Monday at some time in the early morning. In order to use Print-From-Anywhere students must be connected to WolfieNet-Secure. Once the job is sent, the print will remain in the system for 24 hours. If students want to use Print-From-Anywhere off campus, they can do so by using a VPN connection. Color prints cannot be sent from Print-From-Anywhere and must be done in a SINC site through a Windows computer. If a student is trying to their Wolfie Wallet, make sure he or she is using the pharos readers that have the yellow strip  on them.
