The Haunting of Hill House

The Haunting of Hill House, 2021, Kristin Cimmerer, 12.18″ x 8.5″

For my project, I created a book cover for the novel The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson. This book is one of the most well-known ghost stories of the 20th century. In the story, four people are invited to the house to investigate paranormal activity that has been occurring at the Hill-House residence. The spirit of the house is the main antagonist of the story, and I wanted to capture the power and control it has over the characters in my book cover. I attempted to convey this by depicting Hill-House as if it were a dollhouse and the main characters were dolls within it. Two shadowy, ghastly-looking hands can be seen reaching into the house. These hands are meant to represent the evil spirits of the house. The people inside cower away from the hands in fear, but to the spirits, they are merely toys to play with and terrorize.
