For this project, I wanted to capture the universality of playing cards and their ability to transcend language barriers or cultural differences. I attempted to convey this message by writing out the name of the card, for example, “The three of hearts” in different languages. This text was used to fill all of the numbers and symbols on the cards so that their shape could be made out against the white background of the card. The theme of juxtaposition arises from the different languages used to create each card, which in turn, show how widely used playing cards are around the world. For this project, the six cards I chose to use were the two of diamonds, the three of hearts, the four of clubs, the five of spades, the ace of hearts, and the joker.
