Project 1: Covers
This is my redesign of the YA series, The Selection, by Kiera Cass. I wanted to create a more modern and minimalist cover, in contrast to the original book cover.
For this project, I found vector png files that suited the storyline (a dress, a crown, and the red x), and manipulated them to fit the color scheme of the original cover. This was done so that the newly redesigned cover would still be recognized as the same book. I also selected a similar font for the title and other written parts of the book. I wanted the cover to show a bit of the general storyline, so I found out the number of girls that were left at the end of the novel and the girls that were eliminated, and used those 2 numbers for the number of dresses on the front and back cover. Because I used many of the same elements in the cover, it kept my process short, however, there was a bit of a struggle trying to find the original font used for the cover, and finding a way to arrange the dresses.
Project 2: Posters:
Red Rising is a saga about a young hero’s journey to change the structural injustices in his world. The final book in the saga is planned for this year, and I would love to see some kind of live-action adaptation for this series. For this movie poster, I collected images of the characters, as well as some familiar symbols relating to the series, like the mask that is featured on the cover of the first comic, and tried to arrange them to look like many other action/adventure movie posters that we see around us.
Project 3: Cards
In East Asian mythology there are several mythological creatures. The ‘Four Guardians’ or the ‘Four Auspicious Beasts’ are the White Tiger, Vermillion Bird (or Phoenix), Azure Dragon, and Black Tortoise. These symbols are associated with the cardinal directions, colors, seasons of the year, virtues, and other traits in East Asian mythology. Combined with the Yellow Dragon (which is often a symbol of the Chinese emperor), they can then be associated with the Chinese 5 principles system or Wuxing, which was used to describe a wide variety of phenomena in fields like astrology, medicine, alchemy, and military strategy. The Yellow Dragon is sometimes interchanged with the Qilin, a mythological creature that likely originated from stories of giraffes in Africa. The Qilin is unique, as it is the only creature that likely originated outside of Asia. Together these 6 symbols represent many different meanings and traditions.
After doing some research on what these animals represent, I used an application to help me illustrate and arrange my figures and their background/foreground items. I then imported the images into Photoshop and combined them with a stylized border I had found online to help create some sense of cohesion and unity in the final piece.
