Title: Colliding Worlds
Description: I want to explore the idea of human imagination. I am very interested in fantasy worlds and how we like to insert ourselves into them. We create stories in our heads, or invest in various media with imaginative worlds we immerse ourselves in, usually as a form of escapism. I want to capture that feeling visually using photography, digital manipulation, and drawing. The backgrounds would be shot with the camera, mostly scenes in nature. The scenes would be manipulated and drawn on to look more fantastical, i.e. turning foliage an unnatural color like purple or adding a creature that doesn’t exist in real life. Looking at the photos would elicit feelings of confusion and curiosity as one wonders what kind of world is being depicted, as well as the contrasting elements of 2 and 3D. The existence of both 2 and 3D elements references my interests of living in the world of cartoons as a child, and as a way for me to combine my interest in drawing with photography. I am choosing to draw digitally because it allows more flexibility and doesn’t come with limitations on what I can use to draw directly on the photos. Each photo will likely have some repeating elements that connect each of them together.
Outcomes: Four 10×8 (landscape orientation) printed matte color photos, placed at eye level, arranged on the wall horizontally or in a rectangle shape.
Methods and Materials: Photos edited in Photoshop, drawings done digitally using Wacom tablet and then edited into the scene.
References: Surrealism in general. The photos would have a similar aesthetic to a piece I did previously:
