Hello everyone! My name is Mariana Cabral and I am a third-year, international Portuguese student enrolled in Stony Brook University’s doctoral program in Biomedical Engineering. I graduated in May 2022 at Hofstra University with a Bachelor of Science dual major in Applied Physics and Bioengineering, as well as with a minor in Mathematics.
I intend to solidify my critical thinking, expand theoretical knowledge, and learn new skills by pursuing my Ph.D. in BME and, hopefully, be prepared to enter the research community in industry after I graduate in 2027.
I have interests in both the Physics and Biomedical Engineering fields, which originates from my innate curiosity in how the physical world and biological life in general works. I believe I can bridge and apply the knowledge of both of these sciences into the research fields of Synthetic Biology and Molecular Engineering. In this way, I envision to ultimately contribute to the understanding of the pathogenesis of disease and to use a new discipline that integrates physics, biology, and engineering to come up with treatments that will change society, as well as environmental solutions that will change the overall health of the planet.
Outside of my passion for Science, I am very artistic oriented. I have been doing oil painting since I was 7 years old, and in more recent years I have been using watercolor and sketch with charcoal. During my free time I also enjoy doing outdoors activities, such as hiking or any leisure sports. At some point in my life I wanted to achieve both mental and physical strength, so I learned how to do Krav Maga for 3 years before I started college. I love reading a diverse variety of books; however, I would say the Harry Potter series are my all time favorites!
