Photography Final: Figures in Space

For my final project, I would like to continue and expand upon the style I utilized with my portraiture project. The idea was to capture fashion and the human individual in a way that was rather unconventional as far as portraits go. Almost like the work of Pablo Picasso, capturing multiple parts of the human body at the same time and putting them together in composition, emphasizing certain parts over others. I like the sort of surreal effects it can give to an image or a set of images, or with the other conglomerates of images, the tabloid effect it can have.

Teju Cole: Joel Meyerowitz’s Career Is a Minihistory of Photography

Teju Cole’s article for the New York Times titled  Joel Meyerowitz’s Career Is a Minihistory of Photography, was an interesting look at the way a photographer uses composition, as well as the technicalities of a and ‘limits’ of a camera. Cole goes into detail, almost as an english teacher would with a work of literature, to interpret the composition of the images he chose for the article. He describes Meyerowitz’s choice of positioning, the people in the scene, the moment of capture, how the camera qualities were used to capture an image, whether that be to add emphasis to certain aspects or to blend them with the background and rest of the scene. This image especially drew me in because of the composition and the smoke of the image, and it was just a really interesting image altogether. Cole also takes a dive into what Meyerowitz’s vision may have been and the ideas that are trying to be portrayed, depending on the way each photograph was shot, commenting on its straight forward nature, but also the ability to hold ones attention and draw them in with all the other expressions and things going on in the image.
