EOP/AIM Students Receive Their iPads

On Monday, July 6, 2015, Stony Brook University’s Mobile/Digital Now initiative provided 185 EOP/AIM freshman with iPads as they began their four year journey at the University’s Summer Academy. These iPads serve as reinforcements in the University’s commitment to access to excellence for this cohort of freshman and as part of an initiative to help transform and reinvent learning environments, while providing enhanced access to anytime, anywhere learning resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the students get to keep the iPads as their own?
While students at Stony Brook these students may use the iPad as it is their own. They are allowed to install software on the devices in accordance with the terms of usage document they signed upon receiving the devices. Upon graduation the devices may be transferred to the student through a process that will be determined.
Are the devices managed by Stony Brook?
Yes, each device is owned and managed by Stony Brook. The devices are managed through mobile device management,(MDM). This MDM software allows the University to remotely wipe the devices if lost, to assist in finding lost iPads, and to remotely install software or push content to the devices. Stony Brook cannot see how the devices are used, what apps are being used, or what content is being consumed.
Why is Stony Brook providing iPads to these students?
This is the first in a series of pilots evaluating the affordances of mobile devices with students. Over time, there will be other pilots that will help inform us as we consider the wider adoption of mobile devices to support teaching, learning, and scholarship. EOP/AIM was selected as a first population because of several reasons. The EOP program is a very structured eco-system, with hand picked faculty, staff, and activities that are designed to work together to help ensure the success of the students. This allows us to better work to make the iPads a more integrated experience for these students.
How can I be part of the Mobile/Digital Now iPad pilot?
For now the pilots are being kept intentionally small, but they will be expanding. If you have a compelling use case for the use of an iPad as a faculty, staff, or student please feel free to contact the office of the CIO at cio@stonybrook.edu.
