Stony Brook University

BA in English, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook NY, Degree expected: December 2017

With courses taken including:

  • Fiction Writing Workshop

In this class, I went through three rounds of writing new material and one round of taking a previous story and revising it. Each round of the posted stories went through vigorous workshops. Two out of the four submissions were from a larger text which I then expanded on my own. I also gave feedback and participated in my peers workshops of their stories.

  • Feminism: Literary and Cultural Context

The first half of this class focused on studying literary theories dealing with feminism which then we applied to larger, mostly fiction, texts in the second half of the semester. We did collaborative work as well as individual work. We held many discussions, working as a “think-tank.”

  • Investigating Race and Justice in the U.S.

When I took this class, it was the first time it was being offered, so essentially, I was a guinea pig for this type of study. The class worked as a “think-tank” as we investigated many forms and issues dealing with race and prejudice in the nation. We worked through ideas on how to possibly solve them by working in a large, singular group, smaller groups, and individually. I also investigated the subject further by holding many interviews with individuals outside of the university.

  • Utopia and Dystopia and the Environment in Literature and Culture

During this class, we focused on three main aspects. I studied many examples of past and present Utopia’s within the United States and other countries, became an expert while collaborating with other classmates on a specific Utopia which we then presented to the class, and I created my own Utopia which I named Roots

Minor in Writing and Rhetoric

  • The Personal Essay

In this class, I wrote two completed short stories based on real experiences in my life. These pieces of work then went through a vigorous workshop. I, then, had to choose one and put it through revision. I also gave feedback and participated in my peers workshops of their stories.

  • Writing about Cinema

The main idea focused on within this subject was studying films through an analytic lens by looking at gestures from characters, camera angles, lighting, etc. in order to understand why directors made the decisions that they made.

  • Writing for your Profession

This class focused on writing in the professions by working through my resume, teaching me how to write a negative message letter, developing a professional autobiography, and creating this professional portfolio. We also looked at many examples and readings to guide us through the process.

  • Fiction Writing

In this class, I wrote two completed short stories based on my imagination. These pieces of work then went through a vigorous workshop. I, then, had to choose one and put it through revision. I also gave feedback and participated in my peers workshops of their stories.
