ARS 381 – Task 6

Task 6: Final Project Proposal demonstrating self-resourceful research direction in the form of a Final Project Proposal and project-work follow through.

Project Title – Light Paintings

Project Description  – (200 words)

For my Final project I would like to learn how to essentially “paint with light” in images. These types of images fascinate me; to be able to capture the movement of light in a fluid way is amazing to me. I intend to use lights and fireworks to make marks with illumination. I love the darkness, but I love the glow within it as well, which is why i think this kind of art attracts me. Similarly, I would love to see the northern lights, because that is nature’s way of this process of painting with light. I feel that these works by LAPP-PRO give off this magical essence, as well as the artist I did my Presentation on, Trevor Williams. Both artists work in the same ideologies and themes, but they did it in different ways and you can see within their images what kind of vibe each artist gives off in their work.

ARS381 – Task 1

Task 1: Presentation demonstrating proficiency in creating and delivering a spoken/visual research presentation about an artist/artwork of interest (the context for your selection being our course topic). – Selected Trevor Williams – 10 images below (Light Painting Work/Theme)

1. This image is interesting to me as it changes the natural color of the woods into a very vibrant pink color as well as the contrast of the blue on top of the pink. The white light in the center of the blue light makes the object appear as an eye, which I appreciate since I really like eye art.

2. This image reminds me of modern life with the image under the train tracks. Even the birds add a hint of modern day as you can see birds walking around doing their thing everyday. The interesting part about this image is the red “force field” looking spheres around the birds. The birds are some sort of symbol of the group “Fiz-iks” as is can be seen in other images as well.

3. This image also has the modern feel to it with the location being under train tracks as well. Though in this image there are red spheres seen, but one is shaped the same as the last image while the others are more of a different pattern, there are also no birds in this one and these seem to be moving in different ways. There are blue spheres around the red sphere/patterns. I think that the reflection in the water gives a very nice touch to the piece.

4. This image is also under train tracks, showing a pattern in the artists work, along with the symbol of the bird appearing in this piece again. This image has an over lapping multicolored sphere that caves in on itself on the top and bottom; the colors used seem to be blue and red which overlap and create hints of pink and a light blue color.

5. This image is in front of a beautiful building in Japan and the bird symbol is seen yet again in the left hand corner. I find this piece alluring in the use of the same color hue of red and orange, the building is red, the sky is orange and the semi sphere on the ground with squiggly lines is a fiery orange. The color of the bird is blue which creates a contrast of color, the fire looking sphere also creates a chaotic environment in front of a peaceful, elegant looking building.

6. This image is intriguing due to the trees natural state, and these other worldly, red prisms captivating them. The two on the sides aren’t quite around the trees, but the middle one is perfectly around the tree, making your eyes go there first. I also like the contrast between the green leaves or pines on the trees against the red glowing light, and the complete darkness in the background, forcing you to really see whats lit up and in front of you.

7. This image has a calm and chaotic feel to it as you can see someone standing still with a cat mask while there is a wild array of orange and spark looking light going on all around the person. It almost looks like someone standing in front of an explosion like in the movies, yet they are not walking away, they are in it.

8. This image in particular looks like this other worldly technology coming into ones home, invading the simplicity of the home and bringing its unknown existence into the space. There is a yellow ring surrounded by a bigger blue, almost white looking ring, and together they are like rolling vehicles of light. I find the reflection on the floor interesting due to only half of the image being reflected and the yellow light being reflected as red and the white/blue light being reflected darker on the floor. While there is a hint of red seen in the original yellow light, only red can be seen in the refection.

9. This image is in what looks like an empty barn or shed; there are overlapping blue spheres surrounded by bigger pink spheres on the left, vanishing into the smallest one in the back which shows the use of foreshortening. On the right there are overlapping and scattered green and red squares being projected onto the walls, ceiling and floor. It is also interesting to not the different sizes of the squares depending on where they fall, as the ones on the floor seem bigger, closer and elongated which can be seen as another use of foreshortening.

10. This image has a blue hue throughout the entire room. The lights are either blue or white and are used on the words on the wall that read “Art Garden” and in the two big and small semi spheres on the ground. I feel this image gives off the feeling of being in an art gallery, which fascinates me. I also appreciate the soft refections on the smooth marble looking floor.
