Savant; Beyond the Brain

Savant syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental syndrome where someone who shows mental disabilities, also shows exceedingly above average mental skill in something specific like memory, calculations, art, or music, which are usually more visual. I was inspired to further research this disorder after listening to Temple Grandin, and  because it shows unique strengths co-existing with mental disability. Temple Grandin explained just this about Autism, that on the spectrum there are individuals who can actually do more, see things differently, and the world needs these people just as much, if not more than the average person. My interpretation of this neurodevelopmental syndrome evolved, as I explored what it was like to not be stuck in one’s head – doing rather than thinking. I believe Savant Syndrome truly encompasses the idea of being different, not less.
