The Essence of Illumination

The Essence of Illumination

This project intended to showcase the beauty of emotion, expressed through various color schemes. Each woman was granted one emotion and a corresponding emotion to evoke how that color affects them. To compliment these feelings, each woman applied her glitter accordingly. Reflecting the light and color gels off of the glitter created beautiful illuminations and deeper understanding of the woman, herself. I especially loved the way the glitter reflected the light in mid-motion shots. This set of photos has a lot of variation, due to the different emotions and types of shots used. I included both still and motion shots, to contrast the different lighting scenarios and emotional variation of the scene.

Artist Description:

I am a senior Psychology student pursuing a minor in digital art at Stony Brook University. I have been experimenting with photography since I was fourteen, playing around in the darkroom with black and white exposures and maintained the ambition to capture all of the beauty that this world has to offer. From the environment, to humans, to the creations of men, this planet contains so much beauty, of which my eyes are lucky enough to behold. For me, photography is a medium to exude all of the elements that composite human existence. Although human beings are not perfect and they experience negative emotions at times, being able to feel these emotions deeply is an irreplaceable blessing. This photo set was meant to capture exactly that, the emotions of my models through a collaboration of ideas. My models displayed emotions, dependent upon the color we decided upon. Also, I allowed them to paint themselves with glitter, which illuminated nicely against the lights.

OUTCOMES:

-Seven images

-Four different lighting situations depicted, but I experimented with many more

METHODS AND MATERIALS:

-Purchased fake flowers

-Purchased glitter and petroleum jelly for application

-Utilized many different color gels, including fuschia, teal, turquoise, light pink, orange, yellow, green, and red.

-Model used her own fan

-Utilized the latter & chair in the studio

-This process was meant to be a collaboration between photographer and models – as they chose the way they painted their faces with glitter and we chose an emotion accordingly, together.
