Psychopathology

bjhead_2A major goal of research in our lab is to understand how deficits in emotion perception and cognitive control as well as interactions between them contribute to the development and maintenance of psychotic disorders. While these deficits are well-established in schizophrenia, clinical translation of related neural measures has shown limited progress, possibly because the measures do not map on well to traditional diagnostic categories used in these studies. Using a dimensional approach recommended by the NIMH RDoC project our lab is identifying transdiagnostic neural markers that are symptom-specific and track global function dimensionally, irrespective of diagnoses. Identification of these transdiagnostic mechanisms in our research is critical first step before translating them for clinical use.
