Welcome to my website! This project analyzes the online communities known as networked audiences and how they promote the exchange of cultural information and learning. It specifically looks at the Norwegian web series SKAM, and how its unique narrative format created a community around translating languages and understanding cultures, inspiring remakes in seven other countries.
To begin, I will explain exactly what networked audiences are:
Networked audiences are communities formed online around a specific interest or identity, creating a new form of global interaction. Since network audiences form online, they are not restrained by national borders and lead to increased communication between cultures, which in turn can lead to shifts in cultural relationships and identity.
Arjun Appadurai has a theory of globalization that highlights the five dimensions of global cultural flow, with one of these dimensions being “mediascapes”. Mediascapes refers to the use of electronic technologies to distribute information to people all around the world, and how this information intersects with consumerism, news, and politics. The dimensions of globalization come together to form the “imagined world”, which refers to the multiple worlds of the imaginations of people around the globe.
