MOST LAMENTABLE

MOST LAMENTABLE

by Amanda Murphy

Project Description

Most Lamentable is a classic tale, served with a twist. It’s the tale of one despicable villain’s schemes to take the throne. The twist? You’ll have to watch to find out. The play examines the extreme actions that an oppressed minority must rise to in order to achieve autonomy in a system that’s rigged against them. Take a step back in time, fall in love, root for a villain, and learn something about yourself along the way.

Artist Statement

The “key to writing” is to write, and write about what you love. Someone gave me that advice last year, and at first, I didn’t know how to follow it. What do I love? I asked myself. I’m passionate about Shakespeare. I obsessively read books about the Tudors. I love examining strong female characters in literature, art and history. But, I reasoned, I couldn’t write about any of that. Nobody wants to see another medieval comedy with a plucky female character, do they? Then, I read a book which made me realize that “originality” is taking what’s already been done (because everything has already been done), and moulding it into something new. I hope that you’re entertained.
