AT THE TABLE

AT THE TABLE

by Kristen Spenser

Project Description

At the Table is much like an episodic piece,  consisting of the stories of three women that come to sit at the table of life. Each of them left the table as a result of not liking what was on their plate the first time around however, what is on your plate you cannot exchange, it is your life. Carrying the weight and journey that came with leaving the table the first time, the women are now back,  ready to receive what’s on their plate. At the Table  focuses on the relationship between life and how we react to and gain from the experiences we have with it, even if those experiences sometimes hurt us.

Artist Statement

I believe in using metaphor as a medium through which I see the world, and I believe in trying to get others to see the world through this lens.  There are layers to life; people, emotions, the interconnectedness between all living things; and we owe it to the world to acknowledge and reflect that in our art. As I learn about the world around me, my art changes according to what I see and affects what I think is most important to portray on stage. Art matters because it has the ability to connect us in places that we feel or have felt disconnected. My art matters because I strive to remind others that we are above all, one in the same. At the foundation of my art are themes that can be related to by all and I believe that’s the whole point. Art should be something that reminds us all that in almost every way, we are all one in the same. And anything that brings the world closer together rather than apart, is worth doing.
