EL-CUCO

EL-CUCO

by Eloisa Baez

Project Description

El Cuco is a personal story about one girl’s experience with an anxiety disorder. Something so personal, and usually silent and hidden, is embodied in El Cuco—the Boogeyman. Combining movement and text, El Cuco seeks to turn the invisible visible and to be cathartic to anyone who relates.

Artist Statement

So often, we go through an experience, positive or negative, and forget to allow ourselves to feel. We forget that it’s okay to be expressive, in fear that nobody will understand. Drawing from my personal experiences, El Cuco combines movement and text with the idea of the boogeyman as a physical embodiment of anxiety. By telling my personal story, my work seeks to encourage others to find a sense of openness necessary to confront what they feel and allow themselves to feel it.
