Project Description

The life of “average” American woman Diana is used to examine small actions and words that cause immense pain everyday. Silence and suffocation have ruled her life, but will she eventually find justice? Through performance and graphics Snake in the Garden explores how we each affect and are affected by sexism everyday.

Artist Statement

In our world, I see a web of oppression, where long-lived power structures lead to many people hurting and being hurt by one another. I want to share stories and feelings that give people the tools they need to pull out of the web. I express my own feelings and needs through absurdism and hyperbolic simplicity, because turning expectations of art and narrative on their head allows me to reevaluate experience with less bias. I use performance art and visual arts to encourage self-reflection and discomfort, in the hopes that this will grow our empathy towards one another.
