Task 1: Presentation

Fan Ho (1931-2016)

Fan Ho was born in Shanghai in 1931 and began photographing at a very young age.

His photos display a fascination with urban life, explored alleys, slums, markets and streets of Hong Kong back in the 50s and the 60s.

From his love of street photography, he was commonly dubbed as the Cartier-Bresson of the East.

Ho was also an accomplished film director and actor.

He passed away June 2016 at the age of 84 in California.

Approaching Shadow, 1954

I chose him due to the way he has combined his skills as a film director and a photographer, which is showcased by the way each photo has a cinematographic style incorporated within.

His way of composing and directing each photograph was rather new to me, as most street photographers I knew had a messy, rather disorganized composition just the way people would see as they walk down the street.

Hong Kong Venice, 1962

People has criticized him for not being a genuine street photographer, but I believe that we should all respect him for the photographic style he chose as it is his form of art.

On the Stage of Life, 1954
