Guest Lecture by Dr. Lauren Richmond

Dr. Lauren Richmond’s guest lecture was truly insightful. Being a psychology major, i was able to draw parallels between the brain in its biological form and the subjectivity of the art world. It’s so surprising how these worlds connect and intersect at almost all the avenues. Her lecture focused on types of memory and a general discussion on how we recall and store information in our memory centers and how aging impacts these centers. What was so intriguing about it was the fact that the age and the structural form of the brain impact each other and are highly correlated. As we age, so does our brain and the main centers of cognitive processing like the hippocampus. One of the findings from research she shared also suggested that semantic memory (memory involving the capacity to recall words, concepts, or numbers, which is essential for the use and understanding of language) remains pretty much intact as compared to episodic memory as we age. The speed with which we recollect information varies across individuals and this makes it part of the human experience.
