This image, found through Teju Cole’s website and posted without title or information, serves as a deconstruction of the most iconic of still life topics: the bowl of fruit. The vibrant colors and shapes found in a traditional artistic fruit bowl, overflowing with both fruits and beauty, are nowhere to be seen here. The dull yellows and greens give an unappetizing air to the scene, which while when paired with others can add contrast, on their own serve only to bring worry. This bowl is somewhat sad, the pitiful selection and halved banana making the presentation wholy unappetizing, despite the fact that the food there is still most likely perfectly edible. Ironically this is probably much more akin to the selection of fruit in an average house than those found in an idealized fruit bowl, a fact which combined with the underwhelming presentation of the scene may serve as a reflection on how banal reality can be compared to that of artistic perfection.
