Harold Allen was born in Portland, Oregon on June, 29 1912. He had always wanted to study with Miss Gardner and become a painter. In 1937 he had enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago to study with Miss Gardner. He was really successful in his studies and later majored in industrial design and studies photography. He had taken a break in his studies during his third year to earn some money, while he did this he would take night courses to further his education in photography. During this time he would moonlight once a month installing shows at a premier Modern Art gallery in Chicago. He got drafted in 1941 before graduating but became the Army Air Force photographer. While traveling with the Air Force, Allen was able to photograph different agricultural structures in France, Germany and England.
