Narrative Self-Portraiture

Feminize Me

I have always been drawn to narrative photography. There is something special about telling a story primarily through snapshots of reality. This final project focuses on the acceptance of my femininity and identity. The narration is transformation of me as I go from my normal, masculine self to my feminine self. The first picture is of me presenting masculine. The next three pictures are dark pictures of me putting on mascara, me putting on lipstick, and me grabbing my wig and feminine clothing, respective. The darkness in the pictures help show how I actively hid the process of my feminization in the past as I thought that it would be unacceptable. The fifth picture is of me presenting feminine in the light. Finally, the last picture is of me presenting feminine while also fully embracing that side of me. Visually, the narration is simple, but I am hoping that my audience can identify with the theme of self-transformation and finding yourself.

Inspiration

Undoubtedly one of the best at narrative photography is Duane Michals. Particularly, I would like to emulate the energy of “The Dream of Flowers.”
