General advice on presentations

Making slides in latex

For those computer hackers amongst you making slides in latex is a reasonable option.

    1. MacOS has the ability to cut and paste figures directly in pdf. Just use Preview which has a select tool, and save the graphic as pdf. Then include the graphic into the latex source as required.
    2. If all else fails, high resolution screen shots are also an option.
    3. You will also need a way to draw figures. DT uses Xfig and omnigraffle with LaTeXIt for this purpose, but there are other options. JCB recommend tikz (a latex package) and inkscape.
    4. The “beamer” package was used to make the advice given above. The source files are here
    5. LyX is a what-you-see-is-what-you-mean type editor for tex, which might make the editing easier. Another option is to use overleaf.com

Power point

It is possible to give good talks in power point. I don’t know how windows users include formulas. On the mac formulas can be constructed with a package called LaTeXIt. Again on the Mac using “Preview” to select images from papers makes for easy talk writing.

Keynote

Keynote is a Mac alternative to power point. It has a devoted following. You again need a program called LaTeXIt
