Artist Statement
Eyes are the windows of one’s soul. When you open it, it allows you to see the world around you.
The hand represents one’s power and strength. You grasp the opportunities in your hand.
I do think it’s wonderful to take pictures that focus on my eyes and hands to represent myself. Everyone has eyes, but eyes are genetically different and unique for individuals. As an Asian, I do have the most common brown eyes. In recent semesters, I’ve been obsessed with wearing various kinds of colored contacts to express different ways of myself with the colors of amber, blue, green, and even silver. I think colored contacts are like my feelings, if I want to feel cool, I wear something vibrant or some strong colors, if I feel tired, I wear none. As I take photos against the window, I feel myself having 2 eyes that reflect onto the window, one is my eyes with the contacts that give me vision without my glasses, another one is the camera, to show myself differently.
To me, the hands had indeed helped me with a lot of things not just carrying items, typing the keyboards. Hands can also be part of the body with accessories that can bring good fortune. My family told me that, the golden/silver accessories are “feeding” upon your left hand, and in return, they can bring good luck or good fortune. I believe that with the accessories on my left wrist, I may encounter some difficulties, but they can keep me in good fortune and health.
