Professor

Atmospheric Scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory
Professor at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences at Stony Brook University

International Faculty at the University of Cologne, Germany

Kollias research focuses on the understanding of the microphysical and dynamical processes that act at the cloud- and meso-scale, boundary layer turbulence and the interface of high resolution observations and models using simulators. He is also interested in space-borne and phased-array radars and their applications in weather and climate research. He is an international leader in the application of short wavelength radars for cloud and precipitation research from ground-based and space-based platforms and has published over 100 scientific articles in peer-reviewed literature in the areas of millimeter wavelength radar research, cloud and precipitation physics.

Assistant Professor

Prior to joining the faculty at SoMAS in 2015, I received my Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma in 2012 and completed a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in 2014. My main research interest is in the use of high-resolution observations from mobile Doppler weather radars employing new or emerging technologies to better understand mesoscale phenomena, particularly supercell thunderstorms and tornadoes, but also other types of severe convection and mesoscale snow bands. In addition, I am interested in ways that these specialized observations may be generalized so that forecasters may use the large number of new remote sensing tools in real-time to improve severe weather nowcasting. I have participated in a number of  observational field campaigns, including the VORTEX2 field project in 2009-10.

I received a PhD in science from the Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Nagoya University, Japan, in 2010. I was a Post-doctoral Research Scientist at the Hydrospheric Atmospheric Research Center from 2010 to 2012 and at the Pennsylvania State University from 2012 to 2015. I have an interest in radar polarimetry, mixed-phase clouds microphysics, radar simulators.

Wanda Szyrmer

Senior Research Scientist

I have been employed at the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences as a research associate since 2002. I have extensive experience in modelling physical processes such aggregation, riming and melting of ice particles. I also developed detail radar forward model for profiling radars at all radar frequencies that enable model to radar inter comparisons. I have also participated in various research projects such as NARCM, MOC2, SYPAI and EarthCARE.

Post Doctoral Fellow

I received my M.Sc. in Meteorology at the University of Leipzig Germany (2012) and then moved the Netherlands for the Ph.D. (2012-2017). During my M.Sc and Ph.D. work, I specialized in ground based atmospheric radar technique. My research interests are the observations and analyses of precipitation formation within ice and mixed-phase cloud systems using both ground based and space borne atmospheric radar systems. I have strong experiences in data analysis using spectral polarimetric radar data for cloud microphysics. Besides, I have expertise in using instrumental synergies, combining radar and other sensors as well as combining multiple wavelengths.

Research Assistant

I have received an M.Sc. in Atmospheric Science at the Université du Quebec a Montreal (UQAM) and worked there as a research assistant in 2004-2005.

Since 2008, I joined the Clouds Research Group and have been heavily involved in the EarthCARE satellite mission. I have a vast experience in algorithm development ranging from retrieval model of the ice cloud microphysics, detailed radar forward simulator and gridding of the radar observables.

Radar Meteorologist, Bookhaven National Laboratory

My research interests focus on the development of novel techniques for observing the microphysics and dynamics of clouds and precipitation using millimeter wavelength radars, particularly their Doppler spectra, with an emphasis on improving our detailed observational capabilities of cloud-precipitation mixtures toward an improved understanding of precipitation formation processes in both warm and cold clouds. Approaches of particular interest include machine learning, GPU computing, and co-visualization of diverse datasets.
