Final Project Proposal
My final project will be a stop motion animation. The idea stemmed from a narrative photography series I was working on last fall in my ARS 281 class. The series titled Making Friends (2018) featured two of my model build action figures, one of which was building a friend to play with. The stop motion will take the project further by adding the illusion of movement to the work. The film will still be a narrative, the context or area of interest will be quirky and lighthearted. Instrumental music and sound effects will also be created to make the work more immersive.
Artists that have become a source of inspiration for this project are Tanaka Tatsuya, and Pes. The musical component of the project is inspired by the synthe and soft-electro music genre. Japanese artist Tanaka Tatsuya creates photos of miniature art scenes; they range from playful to somber to conceptual themes. Tatsuya’s successful creation of an other-worldly experience in his work is what I wish to create in my short film. Pes is an American film director who creates stop motion videos using everyday objects. The artist’s use of sound, visual elements and camera techniques are key inspirations for my stop motion.
