TMJ Accessory

This was the print that was actually 3D printed. Megan did not want the teeth and decided that she would design them on her own. Thus, we were able to remove the teeth and flatten/smoothen the piece.

Step 1: This was the MRI scan downloaded from online that was dimensioned to Megan’s face and exported into MeshMixer.

Step 2: All of the skull was erased except for the jaw bone and the teeth. At this point, only the teeth were being drawn to look animal – like.

Step 3: The teeth continued to be extracted from the jaw to look animal – like.

Step 4: The final piece, that was thinned out to fit more to the art students face and smoothed it out.

The final project:

The jawbone works by aligning alongside the jaw, and the hook piece curving up arounnd the ear. The fang-like pieces were the aesthetic portion added by Megan to accessorize the TMJ piece and be flat against the face. The piece curves around the jaw and fits to her face.

3D Print Settings

For the 3D print settings, we added 3 shells to make the jaw bone more stable and allow the art student to be able to sandpaper down and smooth it down. The infill settings remained the same, and the jaw bone was laid flat on its side, on the outside of the jaw to stabilize the jaw and make sure that it built properly.
