The subject of my vision for the future is conversation and the ability for people to be able to discuss certain topics with one another in an orderly fashion such that each person can see the other’s viewpoint on the matter. I believe that this idea is important because the ability to discuss a topic with someone is prevalent and present in everyday life. When you don’t agree with someone, you have to be able to discuss it without coming at each others’ throats or nothing will get done, whether it be a small argument about what to get for dinner or a big argument about global warming and what to do about it. Nowadays, a lot of people are closing off their minds if they encounter someone with the opposite opinion than theirs, especially if it’s a touchy subject. If these kind of “conversations” continue, everyone will be twiddling their thumbs as nothing gets accomplished.
My approach to this subject matter is presenting images of more or less extreme cases of “non-conversation”. By showing the viewer this, I hope the viewers sees the images as kind of funny and absurd at first and then takes a moment and thinks about how these images show up and are very relevant to today’s society. Then, that might make them start thinking of what can be done to stop this “non-conversation”.
The sock puppets appear in all three of the images because I wanted the pair of socks to represent a pair of people. The people might be different and have different ideas, but they are talking about the same idea and speaking through the same medium, as humans, or in this case, as sock puppets. With that idea shown and in the back of their minds, it might allow them a moment of clarity to try to view it from view point of another as they are essentially the same as them, human (sock puppet), but with a different background.
