The Precise and Obscure

Project 2: Message and Abstraction

MEMORIES

The Story behind the photo: This was taken the day after 9/11 this year. People leave a flower, in particular, they leave white roses to honor their death. This rose, in particular, was left on who I consider a special person’s name. It was left on my advisor’s twin brother’s name. It was a very sad day and I think you can feel that through this picture. The white rose standing tall even through the gloomy sky and rain.

SORROW

The Story Behind the Photo: I went to a gun violence protest and in the photo, there’s a man dressed in all white with a veil over his head. He is holding a picture of his son who was killed during the Parkland shooting in 2018. His eyes are closed and he was standing very still. You can see through his facial expression how he is mourning the loss of his son but he shows up to the protest to raise awareness and seek justice for his son.

DREAMS

The Story Behind the Photo: This photo was taken at a pier near a lake on a warm day. I wasn’t trying to convey any message in particular. But after I took this picture and I looked back at it and I got a feeling of hesitation or fear. The hands covering their eyes make it seem like they are afraid to see something. I called the photo “DREAMS” because I get the “sleepy” feeling from the wood background and cool colors but with the eyes covered it seems like they are trying to protect their dreams from turning into nightmares. But this picture is open to interpretation.
