Get to Know Me!

Hello, my name is Sarah! This is my first semester at Stonybrook and as a graduate student.  I am a part of the English MA program at SBU.  Becoming a graduate student in an English program is an accomplishment that I have always wanted to achieve.  I am very excited to be here!  I look forward to meeting you all!  As a start, let me tell you about me!

Education: It all started at Miss Mella’s Footsteps to Learning…Just kidding, I definitely do not remember much from preschool.  I got my Associate’s degree at Suffolk County Community College in Liberal Arts.  After three and a half years at St. Joseph’s University, I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in English – Secondary Education.  I was in Child Study at first, but I realized that I loved teaching Edgar Allan Poe and not Green Eggs and Ham.  I also became a part of the Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society.  Currently, I am now a student in (can you guess which school?).

Interests/Hobbies: As an English major, reading and writing are quite high on my interests list.  I enjoy reading fiction novels and short stories from the 19th and 20th centuries.  I enjoy it so much, that I decided to do my thesis paper on the novel Dracula.  This paper focused on the effects of vampirism on women’s sexuality and expression.  Alongside academic writing however, I like writing my own short stories.  I am currently revising a horror story I wrote a few years ago. I am interested in publishing my stories and poems I have written.  If anyone knows of good places for this, let me know! Some topics I am interested in are women’s studies, studies in marginalized groups, race and gender in contemporary literature and media, and more.  I do need to step aside from these typical interests of the major to some other fun ones.  I love to watch movies and older television shows (I can be picky with newer ones).  Some shows I like watching are Outer Banks, Wednesday, Loki, The O.C, True Blood, Cobra Kai, Euphoria, and many more.  I danced for 16 years at Michelle Ferarro’s Dance USA.  Many of my years there, I danced on the national competition team.  You may be surprised to hear this, but it definitely resembled Dance Moms at times.  I have always enjoyed ice skating and roller skating/blading growing up.  I am quite busy these days, but when I can go skating, I do not hesitate.  I also love to sing, and I am really good at it.  Although, I am always afraid to say this because then I will be put on the spot.  Spending time with family, friends, and my boyfriend are also enjoyable things to do as well.  Most of all, a hobby I really enjoy, especially as I get older…NAPS!

Fun Facts: I know I explained a lot of things already but, I just wanted to share some fun things (hopefully someone will laugh or smile!). I am 4 feet and 11 inches tall, I have gone to Disney over 50 times, I can hit the high note in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and I can do singing impressions of Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and a few others.

Goals: My goal in this class is to learn about various media forms that I can utilize as a student and future educator.  Technology and digital platforms are a major part of the world these days.  To better help and accommodate the interests of my future students, I am interested in learning more.  Alongside this, a goal of mine is to get to know all of you!

If anyone has any questions, do not hesitate to ask!  It is very nice to meet you all!

  1. Hi Sarah,
thanks, that’s a warm and lively introduction! I’m so happy that you’re in the class.
I’m a huge Queen fan and loved the Bohemian Rhapsody movie, although unfortunately can’t sing very well so I admire the fact that you can. That’s quite an impressive resume. Do you belt “Defying Gravity” in the privacy of your own home? (I may have mentioned the Wicked movie in my last blog post as an example of remediation, but I’m actually just a big musical theater fan. No talent, just admiration.) Come to think of it, I’m excited that you mentioned Dracula, as that’s another gargantuan franchise for remediation that spans centuries, all the way up to the Twilight universe. So many iterations and permutations through text (including fanfiction), movie, video games, etc.
