Jeffers Engelhardt

Jeffers_Engelhardt_photoJeffers Engelhardt is an ethnomusicologist and Associate Professor of Music at Amherst College, where he is affiliated with programs in Film and Media Studies, European Studies, and the Five College Certificate in Ethnomusicology. His research deals with the relationship of music, religion, secularity, and media; the sonic world of Orthodox Christianity; music in Estonian culture and society; Arvo Pärt; music in Europe, postsocialist Eurasia, and the Finno-Ugric world; and the intersection of music, human rights, and development. His first book Singing the Right Way: Orthodox Christians and Secular Enchantment in Estonia and a co-edited volumeResounding Transcendence: Transitions in Music, Religion, and Ritual are both published by Oxford University Press. He has published articles and reviews in Ethnomusicology, Journal of Baltic Studies, Yearbook for Traditional Music, and Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, as well as chapters in many edited volumes. His research has been supported by the Social Science Research Council and Fulbright-Hays and Woodrow Wilson Foundation fellowships.
