Congratulations to our MCP graduates of Fall 2021!

The end of the year is a time of reflection, as well as a time to celebrate all of our accomplishments. In this week’s post, we’d like to celebrate and acknowledge our MCP graduates of Fall 2021, whose hard work and dedication culminated in their dissertation defenses this semester: huge congratulations to Dr. Christian Salazar, Dr. Tanya Victor, and Dr. Emilie Bouda!

Chris worked in Dr. Michael Frohman’s lab on his dissertation titled “Loss of PLD1 and 2 decreases cancer progression in the MMTV-PyMT breast cancer model through changes in the tumor epithelium revealed by single cell RNA sequencing”
Tanya worked in Dr. Stella Tsirka’s lab, where she worked on her project “The Effects of Cannabidiol (CBD) on Microglial Phenotypes and Homeostatic Roles in a Model of Epilepsy”
Emilie worked in Dr. Miguel Garcia-Diaz’s lab on her dissertation project “Characterizing the Role of MTERF3 in Mitochondrial Ribosome Assembly”

I asked our graduates if they had any advice for younger grad students. Tanya suggests: “When writing your dissertation, set time aside to write one paragraph. Sometimes that time turns into more, sometimes it doesn’t. Either way, you will get there.” Chris recommends taking advantage of LinkedIn when it’s your turn to start job applications, as the social network can help you find jobs,  build valuable connections, and tailor your resume to specific job opportunities.

All three of our graduates this semester are now working in industry. Tanya is a product manager at Enzo Life Sciences, Chris is a Research Scientist in a San Diego startup working on immunotherapies with NK cells, and Emilie is an application scientist at Beckman Coulter.

Although we will certainly miss them, we’re very excited for all of them and wish them all the best on their future endeavors!
