What is SSO?

Science and Society is one of six Undergraduate Colleges at Stony Brook University. The Undergraduate Colleges are SBU’s first-year experience programs which provide holistic support to students as they transition into college. The Undergraduate College of Science and Society (SSO) emphasizes imagination, research, and discovery in a social context. SSO provides a multidisciplinary community for students to explore scientific knowledge and inquiry within a broader ethical, cultural, and political landscape. First-year students who are a part of the SSO community and reside on campus, live in Roth Quad, which is also home to the Center for Science and Society – where many of our classes, events, and programs take place.

We think of science more as a process for developing knowledge, rather than a group of academic subjects! While many of our students are science majors – this is not a requirement to be a part of the SSO Community. However, students should have interest in discovering how science and society are interconnected! Our project theme for the 2020-2021 academic year is the Socioeconomic Impact of Natural Disasters, which explores the interaction between environmental and social science and has relevance today! Please check out our #ThemeThursdays on Facebook and Instagram! to learn more about our theme!
