Dark
My name is Gillian Parker, and I am a senior at Stony Brook University majoring in Studio Art, Art History & Criticism, and minoring in Digital Art. As a non-traditional [read:old] student, my attention is split between my artistic diversions and the generally reasonable needs of my twin children.
Art is my balm. Steeped in equal parts exhilaration and misery from my prior life of adrenaline sports and travel, I have subsequently suffered physical and emotional traumas which should not be spread out over several lifetimes, much less one, and my creations sculpturally and conceptually are my catharsis. In the interest of creating a mosaic from the fragments rather than stew in a trash heap of shards, I seek to examine both psychologically and artistically the combination of trials both invited and endured by myself and the world around me through various mediums, including this current foray into video art.
For my senior show, I present an interpretation of the current climate from within and through personal observations of parts of our collective American society.
Dark is precisely that…dark. It is a conceptual piece which broods and whispers from the shadows in our heads and recesses of our culture as a visual and auditory experience. Dark is our metaphorical consciousness which can be seen as a demise or an awakening dependent upon the viewer’s projection into it.
